Aside from generally needing donations in this first operating year, we have a special reason for wanting many small donors. Because of new tax rules for public interest organizations, if BDTI can receive donations greater than3,000 Yeneach from at least 200 persons (or corporations) during this fiscal year, then the tax advantage for donors next year will be about double its present level. If you're interested, the mathis such that for a donor in, say, the 20%average tax rate bracket, next year the tax benefit willactually be the sameas if that person were in the 40% tax rate bracket – a taxbenefit that istwice as valuable, almosthalving the truecost of donating.
IfBDTI can qualify for this special treatment every year, the impact would be quite large and beneficial for all supporters.
Japan is definitely trying harder now to cultivate a society with more charitable giving to nonprofit organizations. Let's show the government that their efforts have not been wasted!
