BDTI Finance Seminar: Basic Officer Training

“Finance School” for Those Unfamiliar with Financial Statements

Currently, with the Tokyo Stock Exchange promoting “management mindful of capital costs and stock prices,” companies are under increasing pressure to improve their PBR (price-to-book ratio). In addition, rising investor expectations and the emergence of activist investors have made basic financial literacy essential for directors and executive officers.

However, it has been pointed out that directors of Japanese companies generally lack sufficient knowledge of finance and accounting compared to their counterparts in other major countries. In response to this situation, we are pleased to invite Masahiro Shimizu, President and CEO of CFO Room Inc., as the instructor for a six-session finance training program, “Finance Workshop,” designed for those who lack confidence in financial matters.
The program is structured to provide thorough learning, from financial fundamentals to practical applications. We look forward to the participation of those who wish to strengthen their skills as directors or executive officers.

Testimonials from Students

This training was extremely valuable—something I wish I had attended earlier in my career. It helped me develop new perspectives and a language for interpreting financial statements. I highly recommend this program to professionals in legal advisory, government affairs, corporate governance, and related service industries. The discussions with other participants in each session were also very meaningful, making every session something I looked forward to.
Until now, I had never carefully read securities reports and had only received explanations of quarterly financial results at board meetings, which I now regret. Had I taken this course earlier, I believe I could have asked more effective questions. Even during the course, I feel—if I may say so myself—that my questions have become sharper.
Until now, I had read many books on finance multiple times, and while I felt I understood the content immediately after reading, I never truly internalized it. After taking this course, I gained a much clearer understanding of which points and perspectives to focus on when analyzing numbers, and why certain concepts are currently emphasized as particularly important.
The course not only explained the relationship between real-world situations and the numbers using concrete examples, but also clarified why things are that way and how to identify them. Moreover, the advice on how an outside director should ask questions and what perspectives to adopt is invaluable. I highly recommend this course as practical knowledge that can be applied immediately, not just theoretical learning.
Female outside directors are often expected to contribute to governance codes and board diversity, but many may feel a lack of confidence or even a sense of inadequacy due to insufficient basic knowledge in areas like finance. I found the finance training to be extremely valuable in addressing this gap.
I learned a great deal, including how to read securities reports, understand investors’ perspectives, and grasp the roles of outside directors.
